Details: MATHEW MURPHY, Bridge Contractor, was born at Morpeth in 1842, and educated in the same town. On leaving school he was apprenticed to the trade of a wheelwright, and followed it for four years, when he started farming and contracting. This business he still carries on.- He has initiated and completed some of the most important works in the northern districts, notably the bridge over the Hunter at Denman, the embankment at High-street, West Maitland, and many other large undertakings. Mr. Murphy has been on the committee of the school-of-arts for some years and was early elected an alderman a position he retained in 1887. He was married in East Maitland in 1867, has seven children living, and takes an active interest in all local matters
