Details: HUGH MUNRO, Blacksmith and Farrier, was born in 1827 in Ardersier, Inverness shire, Scotland. He left home for Yorkshire when eighteen years of age, and engaged with Messrs. Jackson and Bean, railway contractors, to act as one of their officers in the Channel Islands, constructing breakwaters and fortifications. In the year 1854 he came to Australia, and at once settled down to prosecute his trade as farrier and blacksmith in Singleton, where he has since continued. His is the oldest established business of the kind in the town. In 1873 Mr. Munro was elected an alderman, and has since continuously filled that position, besides occupying the honorable office of mayor for one term, and has always taken an active part in every movement having for its object the welfare of the place of his adoption. lie is a member of the S.C., St. Andrews, 502, Freemasons, and of the M.U.I.O.O.F., having acted as financial secretary of the latter lodge for about twenty-five years, besides having filled all the other offices. He is an adherent to the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Munro is well known as a genial and well-respected citizen, and as one of those who by their hard work and perseverance have helped to bring the place to its present fairly prosperous condition

Details: JOHN MUNRO, Postmaster, was born in 1843 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was a pupil at Dr. Bell s school, Niddry-street. In 1857 he removed with his parents to Australia. Arrived in Sydney, he remained for a short time in Singleton, and in 1858 became a resident of Moree. He entered the employ of Donald Munro, grazier, etc., and remained in that gentleman s service until 1861. He filled the position of pound keeper for a number of years, and in 1867 assisted to collect the electoral rolls, and the census in 1870 for a portion of the Gwydir district, afterwards entering the employ of Mr. McKenzie, storekeeper and postmaster. In 1877 he entered the Telegraph Department at Narrabri as a probationer, remained there for six months, and was in the same year appointed post and telegraph master at Moree, which position he now holds. Mr. Munro is a resident of the district of upwards of thirty years, is married, and the father of one son and one daughter.

Details: Inquest held at the Hexham Hotel on the body of John Munro, labourer who died after the wheels of a train passed over his body after he fell from the back of the engine. Witnesses. Constable John Lea station at Hexham; John Lyons, engine driver; Thomas Robinson, engine stoker; Thomas Chalmers deposed that he knew the deceased who was living for the last three weeks at witnesses house. Deceased was a native of Glasgow, a single man, and about 23 or 24 years of age. Found on his person was a testimonial from the Master of the Dovison which ship Munro had wored as a steward on the passage to Australia three months previously
