Surname: Geary
First Name: Thomas
Ship: Lord Lyndoch 1833
Date: 23 October 1835
Place: Newcastle
Source: Newcastle Court of Petty Sessions, Bench Books, 1833-1836 (Ancestry)
Details: Thomas Geary per Lord Lyndoch, assigned to William Sparke, charged with neglect of duty and insolence. William Sparke testified....I ordered the prisoner to reap some barley and he has not done so much in three days as he ought to do in one. He has not reaped half an acre. He had done so badly that I took him away and ordered him to mortice some posts. He had been the whole day at work and had finished only twelve, the usual work for a common workman would be two and twenty. A good workman would mortice thirty easily. When I reproved him he answered very insolently that he had done enough. When I went to see what he was doing, he was absent from his work. He was absent to my knowledge a quarter of an hour. When I ordered him to court he said he must have his breakfast first altho he might have had it before. Instead of coming to me to get a pass as I ordered him, he left the farm on his way to Newcastle. He had not done any work that morning. The prisoner denies the charge generally. Guilty. Sentenced to fifty lashes
