Details: Reminiscences of Maitland - Description of Molly Morgan - Maitland in 1829, had neither local habitation or name; the writer never mentioned its present site, except as 'Molly Morgan's; now the latter designation is almost fallen out of the memories of men, and only a few of the older residents can recall the figure of the little old woman, with her age stooped back, her clutch on the shoulder, her nodding head, and her impressive gestures, as she gave the ever ready advice.

Details: WALLIS PLAINS. But It was not till about 1812 that any effort was made to develop the agricultural possibilities of the district, when "The Camp' assumed rather more important proportions. For some years onwards, official encourage-ment was given to settlement, and finally In 1818 Governor Macquarie visited Wallis Plains, as the place had become, and decreed that the land be thrown open for settlement. The three first men to take advantage of |official Intention were John Eckford, John Smith, and William O'Donnell, all of whom received grants in the district. But the most effective personality to enter thereto was the Amazon pioneer, Molly Morgan, whoso energy and force of character so dominated the whole place that for a number of years It was known as "Molly Morgan's Plains." Molly Morgan, who had other names as well and quite a number of husbands of one sort or another, was a woman of remarkable character, considerable Intelligence, and some decided charm of manner. In spite of having been twice transported to the Colony, having Indulged In many curious escapades, and being reported as subject to violent drinking bouts, she received a Crown grant of 159 acres, which has since become the most valuable part of West Maitland, of which she was an original pioneer

Details: The site on which West Maitland now stands was known to the early settlers as Molly Morgan s Grant, from the fact that a large portion of land in the locality had been granted by the Government to an eccentric old character named Molly Morgan, one of those, it is said, who left her country for her country s good. The spot was a favourite camping ground of the aboriginals, of whom there were then considerable numbers now, alas only represented by a few miserable half-castes. By the natives the place was called Minderribba, while the opposite side they named Bolwarra. The former appellation has entirely faded away before the English name Maitland, while the latter still remain applied to the district, upon which it was bestowed
