Details: The site on which West Maitland now stands was known to the early settlers as " Molly Morgan's Grant," from th(fact that a large portion of land in the locality had beer granted by the Government to an eccentric old character named Molly Morgan, one of those, it is said, who left hercountry for her country's good. The spot was a favourite camping ground of the aboriginals, of whom there were then considerable numbers -now, alas ! only represented by a few miserable half-castes. By the natives the place was called Minderribba, while the opposite side they named Bolwarra. The former appellation has entirely faded away before the English name "Maitland," while the latter still remain applied -to the district, upon which it was bestowed

Details: A SAD BEREAVEMENT.-We seldom have so sad a bereavement to record as that which has befallen Mr. Alfred Miner, of Stockton. Mr. Miner has had a very violent fever raging in his house for some days, and on Sunday last one of his children died. On Monday his wife died; and yesterday-shortly before her body was removed from the house for burial--another of the children died. We are informed that last evening another child was in a very dangerous condition. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved man, who is held in respect by all who know him.
