In 1865 he started business as a grocer and provision merchant in a small way in Hunter-street, and eight years later he removed to his present premises, which he owns. He has a bulk store in Telford-street, and does one of the largest trades of its kind in Newcastle, combining both wholesale and retail. He is married and has eight children.

Details: District Court - Lee v. Dugan. This was an action brought by the administrator of the estate of the late Frederick Smith to recovered money for goods sold and delivered to defendant s wife. David Miller, an assistant in the store belonging to Frederick Smith was a witness; Henry Porter who was a delivery driver for Frederick Smith was a witness. James Dugan, was the defendant. Frederick Smith, who owned a grocery store on the site the Great Northern Hotel was later built on, was thrown from his horse and killed in 1863
