Details: Alice Victoria Claxton, aged 21. Highly-respected resident of the Junction, for the past two years had been employed as a machinist at Messrs Stegga and Co in Hunter-street. She was engaged to be married to James Dick, an engineer residing at Hamilton. While walking in Hunter-street on a Saturday night with her sister and a friend was struck and killed by a runaway horse attached to a sulky that was owned by Percy Taylor of Carrington. Others injured by the horse included James Smith 15, of Wickham and Moses Stevenson, 16 of Carrington, Michael Doyle of the Junction. Frank Meara, son of Senior-constable Meara of Carrington was the hero of the day having jumped into the moving sulky to try and bring the animal to a stand-still
