Details: JOHN FRANCIS BARRY, Commercial Hotel, High-street, was born in Maitland in 1859, and educated in that town. He afterwards learned the tailoring, which he followed with one firm for thirteen years, and in 1886 became landlord of his present hotel. This hostelry, which is most centrally situated, was built and opened by J. W. Tuck about forty-five years ago and has frontages to High and Charles streets. The ground floor is devoted chiefly to bar, dining, and sitting rooms; while upstairs are a dozen large, well-lighted and ventilated bedrooms and a spacious and well-finished drawing-room. The stabling at the rear is the most extensive of any hotel in the district. Since taking possession, our subject has made great alterations to the house, including a balcony about fifteen feet wide on two sides. This hotel has a large connection amongst country visitors and is the principal resort of the members of the sporting and athletic clubs, Mr. Barry being a member of the Northern Jockey Club and the Northumberland Football Club
