Details: The old two-storied brick building at the corner of High and Little Hunter Streets, West Maitland, is in process of demolition, to make way for a modern building, to be erected by the Maitland Presbyterian Glebe Trust. The western section of the old building was erected in the early fifties, and was used for some year as a grocery store by the late Mr. James Wolstenholme, who conducted a flour mill in St. Andrews-street. The second section, which extended to the corner of Little Hunter street, was erected some years later, and was used as an inn. Its first name was Ben Bolt Inn, but that was soon changed to The Sportsman, and finally to The Australia Hotel. Thomas Masters sand Robert Turner, old-time hotel licensees, were among the earliest to conduct the hotel, but the Wall family was in possession for many years up to the middle nineties. Edward Wall, who was licensee previously at the old Spread Eagle, Rutherford, and at the Coach and Horses, Elgin street, West Mailtland, held the licence, and was followed by his widow.
