Details: ANTON WILLIAM MARTENS, Colonial Wine Merchant, Port Stephen-street, was born in Germany in 1829, and on leaving school became a sailor. In 1857 he abandoned the seafaring life and settled in Raymond Terrace, where he worked for some time in a coal pit. In 1866 he leased the Mount Hall vineyard and commenced wine growing. This he carried on for seventeen years, turning out a yearly average from 3000 to 4000 gallons. In 1883 he retired from the wine growing and erected a handsome residence in town, whence he removed and opened business as a wine and spirit merchant. This he continued until 1887, when he gave up the spirits, now conducting his establishment solely as a colonial wine store. Mr. Martens was for fifteen years a member of the road trust. Ile is the owner of a quantity of town property, and a member of the I.O.O.F.,M.LT., and A.O.D. He was married in 1858, and has one child living
