Details: HORRIBLE MURDER. The Bench of Magistrates here were occupied the whole of this day, investigating a charge of wilful murder, preferred against a man of the name of Joseph Marsh, lint keeper to Francis Little, Esq. On Tuesday (yesterday) morning Marsh, after partaking of breakfast at Mr. Henry Smith s inn, Scone, went behind the bar, and told him he had murdered a man at the same station (about 3 miles from Scone) with a tomahawk, and that he had intended murdering two more had they come in his way, giving their names. Mr. Smith at first thought the man was romancing, but as the man appeared perfectly sober, Mr. Smith sent for a constable, and the moment he arrived, Marsh held out his hands to be handcuffed, and related to the constable the manner in which he perpetrated the deed with a tomahawk, the place m which he would find the instrument, and other particulars ; that he gave the unfortunate man two blows, one across the nose, the other across the temple. The deceased man, on examination by Dr. Fowler, showed a horrid spectacle, the first blow having divided the upper jaw from ear to ear, and which might have been inflicted by such an instrument as the one produced ; the second dividing the left temporal and the greater part of the frontal bones, penetrating into the sub- stance of the brain to the depth of about two inches. Dr. F. stated that either of the wounds was sufficient to cause instant death ; that he fully believed that when the blows were inflicted the deceased was asleep, judging from the position of the man, and the bed clothes being in their proper place, and also from the garments of the deceased, even to the boots, being placed as if he had gone to bed in the usual way. The prisoner has not made any further disclosures to-day, but last evening, in the lock-np, he attempted to destroy himself by bleeding himself to death in the bend of the elbow with two needles, which he had concealed in his hat ; and had not medical attendance been close at hand, he no doubt would have accomplished his purpose, as his voice brought the keepers to his cell, when he was found nearly exhausted from loss of blood. The prisoner is remanded for further evidence to corroborate his statement. The only cause he can give for committing the deed, is that the deceased, Marrah, stole some of his sennett (he being a hat maker) and clothes. There was no blood on the prisoner s clothes, although the blows must have been struck with great force .She ,tomahawk is smeared with the brains of the deceased, and there is blood on the handle
