Details: MICHAEL MAGUIRE, Railway View Hotel, was born in 1828 in County Fermanagh, Ireland, and educated under the Rev. E. McLaughlin, who was afterwards president of St. Curtain s College, County Monaghan. He came to Sydney in 1851, and received an appointment as teacher of a denominational school in Sussex-street, was appointed to a school in Singleton, which he held for a short time, and then went to the gold rushes at Hanging Rock, Bingera, Rocky River, and the Maroo, where by five years labor he accumulated some means, with which he returned to Singleton and purchased land in the vicinity of the present railway station. For a few years after this Mr. Maguire devoted his attention to farming pursuits till the railway passing through his property induced him to erect, the present hotel in 1861. This house is well known as the oldest in South Singleton and has a large connection among the country population. It possesses extensive accommodation, having fourteen rooms, with commodious stabling and yards in close proximity to the Railway Station. Mr. Maguire is married and has a family of five sons and three daughters. He is looked upon as a liberal minded and progressive citizen, being always willing to aid in any measure calculated to benefit the community He was for many years an active member of the committee of the Benevolent Society
