Details: WILLIAM LONGWORTH, Manager and Part Owner of Singleton Coal and Coke Company, was born in Lancashire, England, in 1847, and came to the colony in 1849. He served in various parts of the Hunter River district as a coal miner, with a short intermission as gold-digger till 1879, when he and his brother Thomas opened the Elsmere Colliery and successfully worked it till 1885. In that year they united with Dr. Reed, the owner of the New Park mine, in constructing a branch line to connect their works with the railway. When this was accomplished and the two properties were amalgamated, each of the mines was worked by the new partnership. The coal is taken from the tunnels, and the out-put is equal to eighty tons per day ; the company finding work for about sixty hands. The coal from these mines is the best gas-producing in the colony, and splendidly adapted for making coke, large quantities of which are made at the works. It was awarded the highest place at the Adelaide Exhibition in 1887. The firm supply coal under contract with the Government for the whole of the locomotives travelling north of Singleton. The firm have an area of 1400 acres of land under lease, furnishing a practically inexhaustible supply of coal. They now pay in wages about £500 per month, but if greater facilities were afforded for the carriage of coal to Newcastle, they could command an out-put equal to the large mines in that city. In the management of the mine our subject is assisted by his brother Thomas. Mr. W. Longworth is a member of the G.U.O.O.F., and there is an accident fund in connection with the colliery, which is in a flourishing condition. There is a public school, two stores, and a wine shop all supported by the works. Mr Wm. Longworth and his brother Thomas are both married, the latter being the father of three children. The subject of this sketch is of opinion that a revolution in the differential railway rates of carriage would considerably add to the prosperity of the firm s mine, and consequently of the district generally ; and believes that a protective duty on iron would be the means of establishing big works, as large deposits of iron ore exist in the district.
