Details: William Lawrey per ship Mary, in service to James Phillips, charged with absenting himself from his duty and insolence to his master. Mr. Phillips states - I was about to proceed to my farm yesterday, but was prevented by my servants absenting themselves from the boat. I searched a number of houses before I discovered them at a public house drinking. I ordered them immediately to the boat and I followed in a short time after; on my arrival at the wharf, two of my men were there, but Lawrey had again absented himself and it was a considerable time before I found him seated smoking his pipe in the lumber yard. On my reprimanding him for the trouble he had given me he answered very impertinently - Cannot I have time to speak to my ship mate - the prisoner admits having made use of very improper language to his master and expresses his sorrow for it. States he went to the lumber yard to get the superintendents Clerk to write a letter for him. Has no reason to complain of ill treatment from his master. Sentenced to 50 lashes and to be transferred to Dr. Morans service
