First Name: William
Ship: -
Date: 1888
Place: Singleton
Source: The Aldine centennial history of New South Wales illustrated / W. Frederic Morrison Morrison, W. Frederic Sydney. The Aldine Publishing Company, 1888
Details: WILLIAM LAVERTY, Farmer and Produce Merchant, was born in Antrim, Ireland and arrived in the colony in 1850, having spent the previous five years in America. He came to Singleton immediately on his arrival and has been a resident there ever since. He worked here for some years as a wheelwright, but in 1859 commenced farming, and has followed that pursuit with profit to himself and family at Redburn and Bury, farms of about fifty two acres. Mr. Laverty has almost entirely given up the growing of cereals, and confines his attention to the production of vegetables on a large scale, finding that more remunerative. Ile has been connected with the Agricultural Society since its inception, and has been a member of the committee for the past fifteen years ; he is also a member of the Farmers Association, and has been a trustee of the Wesleyan Church for twenty-five years. Mr. Laverty is a representative citizen, who is widely known and respected, but owing to failing health, has not been able to give so much of his time and attention to public matters as formerly. He is the father of four sons and five daughters, one of the former being a Wesleyan minister
