Details: ANDREW KIRKALDY, who was born in Fifeshire, Scotland, in 1834, and arrived in Victoria in 1854, visited Ballaarat and Creswick goldfields, and then removed to Newcastle in 1855. He worked as a miner in the latter place for twelve years, and then took the General Washington Hotel, Stockton, which he kept for three years. He next occupied the Prince of Wales Hotel, on the site of the present Bank of New Zealand, and carried it on for eight years and a half, when lie opened his present hotel, the Hunter River, which he has now carried on for nearly ten years. Mr. Kirkaldy is a member of the A.O.F., R.A.O.B., the G.U.O.O.F., and the G.L.N.I.A. Committee. He was a member of the first party to select land in Lake Macquarie for the purpose of opening up the coal beds which they felt sure existed there in vast quantities. He is married, is the father of eleven children, all of whom are living, and is connected with the Presbyterian Church.

Details: CAPTAIN JAMES KIRKALDY, now commanding the Volunteer Artillery, Newcastle, was born in Fifeshire, Scotland, in 1844, and when ten years of age arrived in Victoria with his parents, who, after a year s residence in Geelong, settled in Newcastle, New South Wales. For a number of years Captain Kirkaldy followed various occupations. In 1858, when the Port Curtis gold rush eventuated he visited the field, but shortly afterwards returned. Subsequently he made several voyages to sea, visiting New Zealand, Melbourne, and many other ports. His intention was originally to follow a seafaring life, but at the request of his parents he altered his mind. He was for a considerable time with Mr. Beaumont, mining engineer and surveyor. In 1867 he made the acquaintance of the late Mr. W. Keene, F.G.S., Government Geologist and Examiner of Coalfields, who selected him to assist in the various duties in the Coalfields Office, and in the absence of the Inspector of Collieries, to carry out his duties in the northern district. He took a great interest in geology, receiving every encouragement and instruction from Mr. Keene. In 1868 he joined the Volunteer Artillery in Newcastle as a gunner. He was appointed Quartermaster Sergeant in 1872, and in the same year was raised to Second-Lieutenant. In 1874 he was given the rank of First-Lieutenant, and in the year 1882 was promoted to the rank of Captain. For the past sixteen years Captain Kirkaldy has been connected with the firm of Wood Brothers and Co., Newcastle, filling the position of travelling representative. In 1874 he married the second daughter of the late Captain Peters, of the Maitland district. He is a member of the A.O.F. and of the R.A.O.B., and takes a very active part in politics

Ranclaud, coroner and a jury of twelve of whom Thomas Cheeseman was chosen foreman, on the body of Robert Wright, who was killed in the Lambton Colliery on Friday 24 day of March by a fall of coal. Witness included – James Johnson, miner employed at the Lambton Colliery, mate of Robert Wright; James Lindsay, junior, coal miner working at the Lambton Colliery, working nearby; Thomas Croudace, manager of the Lambton Colliery; James Kirkaldy, examined the scene of the accident in the absence of the Inspector of Colleries; John James Hill, medical practitioner, residing and practising at Lambton, attended Robert Wright at Wrights house until his death a few days later.
