Details: JOHN D. BARKLAY, Eaton s Hotel, was born in Truro, Cornwall, in 1842. He is it nephew of the late Sir W. Lawrence-once Lord Mayor of London-and when seventeen years of age travelled through the United Kingdom, removing to the United States, where he was " pressed " to serve in the Federal Army. He served in the 7th Pennsylvania Regiment, and in the 4th New York. He then removed to Australia, first settling in South Australia. For several years he was a manager and inspector of various silver and lead mines, and became interested in mining ventures in Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. Eventually he settled in the County of Durham (mining locality) and became a shareholder and manager of the Hulph Gottes Mine. In 1881 Mr. Barklay leased one of the leading hotels in the district. This house contains thirty-two rooms, large billiard room, extensive stabling accommodation, and is one of the most complete hotels imaginable. Mr. Barklay is an excellent host. He was one of the founders of the Prince of Wales Lodge, E.C., of which lie is now P.M. He is married, and has two sons and two daughters
