Details: JESSE IRELAND was born at Eldersfield, Worcestershire, in April 1835. His early days were spent in that and the adjoining county of Gloucester, where after completing his education he was occupied for three or four years in surveying land, measuring, &c., under Mr. Stephen Pryce, agent to Lord Sudely. whose employment he left in March, 1855, to try his fortune in Australia. In April of the same year, accompanied by-two of his brothers, he left Liverpool in the ship 11 Marco Polo, and arrived in Melbourne in June. He did not stay long in Victoria, but came on to New South Wales, where, after experiencing many of the ups and downs incidental to colonial life in those days-including trying his band at the diggings-he settled down to steady - business, first at Baulkam Hills, near Parramatta, and afterwards at Penrith, where he resided five years, and gave evidence of that application to business which was so remarkable a trait in his character during his residence in Newcastle. Finding Penrith too small to give sufficient scope to his ambition, he left that lace and visited all the towns of importance in the colony, seeking one more suitable to his tea, where he could make a fresh start in business. He finally fixed upon Newcastle as t e best for his purpose. When Mr. Ireland left Penrith he received letters of thanks from the heads of the various Protestant churches and the hospital, to all of which be left handsome donations. He received as thank- offerings many letters, in one of which appears the following passage: We rejoice that you so acknowledge the Divine blessing resting upon your business transactions in Penrith, and trust that you will be blessed with similar success in your present undertaking. From the captain of the Penrith Volunteer Corps at that time No. 1 Company in the whole colony-he was made the recipient of a highly complimentary letter, in which be was described as one who endeavoured to further the interests of the corps on all occasions since he became a member. All these remarks apply with perfect accuracy to Mr. Ireland during his residence in Newcastle, where, although from his naturally retiring disposition he did not take a leading part in public affairs, he was ever foremost in aiding and assisting in every good work. He built up a large business, and was looked upon as one of the keenest yet most upright commercial men in the city. His sudden death came as a surprise upon all who knew him, and it will be along time before his active figure and cheerful face are forgotten, but his examples of honor and integrity will long remain as a memorial
