At the end of that time he came to Newcastle, and immediately started road and bridge making for the Newcastle Corporation and other municipal bodies in the district. He has constructed almost all the corporation contracts for the past twelve years, and, amongst other work, built the Laman-street bridge, and made Woolfe-street. Details: THOMAS HUNNIFORD, Hidden Treasure Hotel, Laman-street, was born in Bristol, England, in 1827, and arrived in Brisbane in 1854. He followed goldmining pursuits for many years both on the diggings of New South Wales and Victoria, meeting with fair success; but getting wearied of that life he resolved to settle down, and in 1887 purchased his present property, which is one of the most comfortable hotels in Newcastle. It contains fourteen rooms, four of which Mr. Hunniford added after purchasing. The house received its name on account of a tin of old coins having been found in excavating the foundation. Mr. Hunniford only paid £800 for the property, and a short time ago be refused £3000 for it, being sufficient proof that in his hands the trade, as well as the property, has been much improved. Mr. Hunniford is married, and is the father of one daughter ; he is a brother of the corporation contractor of that name, and is widely known as an honest upright citizen.
