NSW with parents May 1828; father became settler on large grants in Hunter R dist. Ed. Maitland. Took up Thungalier run nr Walgett with brothers 1843; manager 1847. Given land in Hunter dist by father 1852; by 1877 had enlarged it to 20,000 acres, growing oranges and wheat; later enlarged to 25,000 acres. Became squatter on Culgoa R 1857; c. 1858 took up Gnomery and Wyambah, 250,000 acres on Warrego R in Qld, running cattle; in 1883 as Hungerford & Sons took up 3 million acres in Gulf country, as well as Cudelgo, 1500 square miles in SA nr Qld border. Hurt by 1890s depression and drought; by 1896 Bank of NSW had taken over properties. Interested in Aborigines; compiled dictionary of Aboriginal words for own use. MLA for The Upper Hunter 21 June-12 July 1875; for Northumberland 29 Oct. 1877-14 April 1880, 18 Jan.-23 Nov. 1882; for The Upper Hunter 26 Oct. 1885-26 Jan. 1887
