              Details: John Deaton indicted for having committed an assault on James Levick, a constable whilst in discharge of his duty; a second count charged the prisoner with common assault. Constable Levick had arrested Deaton after a fight in Hunter Street, when on the way to the lock up Deaton bit the finger and thumb and right arm of the constable and pulled his hair. The wounds were very severe - bleeding freely, and were more torn than bitten and needed attendance of a doctor for a week afterwards. Witnesses for the Crown were Robert Corbet Knaggs, Edwin Henry Lake and James Baxter. Witnesses for the defence William T. Smith, William Ahern, Henry Morris, James Huntsdale and Alfred Griffiths, Letitia Tortoni; Accused was said to be a very quiet well behaved man and it was because of the ill usage he received from the policeman that he assaulted the constable. He was found not guilty on both charges and discharged

              Details: Adjacent to the grave of John Devonald is the grave of the Knaggs family, who did much to promote the prosperity of Newcastle. Here we read: Sacred to the memory of Robert Samuel Knaggs, died 1856 aged 17 years. Also, Robert Corbet Knaggs, M.R.C.S.L.  L.S.A., born 1809, died May 31st 1877 aged 67 years. The stone also silently speaks of Phoebe wife of Dr. R. C. Knaggs, of John Robert Knaggs, her eldest son and of Bessie Marianne, the granddaughter of the doctor, who, being dead, yet speaketh by the many records he left behind him.

              Details: The following notifications respecting Dr. Samuel T. Knaggs, son of our esteemed citizen Dr. R. C. Knaggs appear in a recent Dublin paper – KING AND QUEENS COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS IN IRELAND – At the monthly examination, held in the College Hall, on Wednesday 13th April, Mr. Samuel Thomas Knaggs of Newcastle, New South Wales, having been solemnly and publicly examined in the art and science of the practice of physic, was granted the diploma of the College to practise as a physician. ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS IN IRELAND - On Thursday 14th April Dr. Samuel T. Knaggs having been duly examined in the art and science of midwifery was granted the diploma of the College in that subject. At the quarterly examination held on the 23rd 26th and 27 April Samuel T. Knaggs L.K.Q.C.P. Ireland passed the second and third examinations for the Letters Testimonial and received the diploma of the college to practise as a surgeon. COMBE LYING IN HOSPITAL – At a special meeting of the Board of Examiners of this hospital held on the 28 April, Samuel T. Knaggs, having been found duly qualified was granted the diploma in midwifery of this hospital. We understand that it is the intention of Dr. Samuel T. Knaggs to prolong his stay in Europe another year to study in the British and continental hospitals

              Details: Dr. Samuel Thomas Knaggs, whose death occurred in Sydney on Wednesday, was at one time of the best known citizens of Newcastle. He was 79 years of age, and a native of Ireland. His father, Mr. R. C. Knaggs, conducted a chemist s and stationer s shop in Hunter-street. After leaving school young Knaggs went to Ireland, where he qualified as a medical man. He returned to Newcastle, and for a number of years was prominent in medical circles, and was a member of the honorary staff of the hospital. He removed to Sydney over thirty years ago, and carried on practice until a few years ago
