Date: 2 February 1876
Place: Condobolin
Source: The Evening News
Details: Only a few months ago, Dr. Horatio Costerton received the appointment of surgeon to the Forbes District Hospital. Independently of the assured income from that source, there wag a, large private practice waiting to be appropriated by any competent, steady, professional man - a practice that would yield from 1000 to 2000 pounds per year. After holding the post of hospital surgeon for a few weeks. Dr. Costerton forfeited the appointment, and removed to Condobolin, where he only remained a short time, and becoming ill, again entered the hospital as a pauper patient. A week ago he died and was buried, away from friends and home, and with not a soul in attendance to give even the semblance of mourning or regret at the termination of a wasted and ruined life.

Details: A short time ago we extracted from a country paper a brief notice of the death of Dr. Horatio Costerton, at Forbes. From correspondence forwarded to us, we learn that the deceased gentleman, in former years, did useful work as surgeon-superintendent in the Government emigration service, in which capacity he made eight voyages, and had charge of 2675 persons. He also subsequently came out in a private ship, the General Hewett. Some eight or nine years ago he received a severe shock to his system by a railway accident, and about three years since, while amputating the leg of a patient, he punctured his finger, and suffered from blood poisoning to an extent which proved nearly fatal. Although having recovered from its worst effects, it left him, says our correspondent, in a most enervated state, at times almost amounting to paralysis, from which he never entirely recovered. His constitution being thus affected, the least stimulant or extraordinary heat of the atmosphere had a most marked effect upon him. About two months previous to his decease he suffered from an attack of dysentery which brought him very low. Had his wife known of his illness in time, measures would have been taken to ensure his comfort. Under the circumstances the deceased gentle mans family is thankful that he was so situated as to be able to obtain that advice and assistance which, in the bush, can rarely be obtained otherwise than at a hospital.
