Details: In 1917 the Newcastle Herald reported: “The reclamation of the foreshores and the deepening of Throsby Creek are bringing to the Carrington side large timber industries. The joinery workshops and yards of Messrs Armstrong and Royse almost adjoining Cowper street, are practically completed. The firm are now engaged in preparing for the installation of the machinery; The Newcastle Herald reported on a disastrous fire that almost totally destroyed Armstrong & Royse timber yard in 1923…. One of the most disastrous fires in the history of Newcastle occurred last night, resulting in the almost total destruction of the sawmill and joinery works of Messrs. Armstrong and Royse, Limited, Carrington. The works are situated on the east ern side of Wickham Basin, adjoining Cowper-street, and cover an area of between five and six acres. The fire was most spectacular, and when at its height lit up the landscape for miles around. The outbreak was discovered shortly before half-past nine o clock, and apparently it was seen by a number of persons almost simultaneously, for the alarm was received by headquarters, Carrington, and Wickham Brigades from various quarters. Among the first to notice the fire was Mr. G. Palmer, a resident of Hargrave-street. Carrington, who was crossing a paddock in the vicinity of the works, when he saw a Jet of flame shoot up from the eastern end of the sawmill. He immediately ran to the Carrington Fire Station and gave the alarm.
