Details: WILLIAM E. COMFORT, Steam Cordial Factory, was born in England, and arrived in Australia in 1876. Seven years later he came to West Maitland and purchased his present business. Since that time he has largely increased his connection, made extensive alterations to the premises, and added all the latest and most improved machinery and appliances, which are worked by steam-power. He has now one of the largest businesses of the kind in the district, the output of the factory averaging about 2000 dozen per week, by which six hands are constantly employed. He has been awarded numerous first prizes at the various agricultural exhibitions at Maitland and Singleton for cordials. He is a married man, and has three children living

Details: Lady Jane Franklin alighted from the Tamar steamer at the stone stairs on the side of the quay and walked to the Commercial Hotel up the street on the right. It had a pointed chapel front. The house was shut up and upon knocking on the door a chambermaid appeared in a ragged shift & single flannel petticoat, no shoes, stockings nor nightcap. The house was worse inside - 2 parlors, one with fireplace which burnt wood and Newcastle coal of which the whole place smelled
