Details: Matthew Clarke assigned servant to Alexander McLeod charged with neglect of work and insolence to his master. John Mentzlaer a constable states as follows - Mr. McLeod came to the saw pit where the prisoner was and complained that he had not done sufficient work and called me to take him in charge I did and was bringing him away. Mr. McLeod followed and abused him for not doing his work to which the prisoner replied something about slop clothing. He also made use of other language to Mr. McLeod but I cannot recollect what the words were. Mr. Hudson stated....I was at the pit with Mr McLeod who was complaining that there was very little work done. The prisoner replied ...I cant pretend that there is. I dont care receiving 50 lashes and being sent to Port Macquarie...On his being given in charge to the constable , he still continued to make similar observations. His partner at the saw pit offered to do the regular quantity of work with another person. The prisoner stated that Mr. McLeod struck him but does not produce any proof. Sentenced to 50 lashes and hard labour in the mines until further orders. NB Corporal punishment remitted to 25 lashes
