Details: Born at Norwood near London and educated at Aske's Hospital School. IN 1830 entered as clerk, the office of a shipping broker and came to Australia in this employment in 1833. In 1837 began business for himself as a farmer at Williams River. Started as an auctioneer in Sydney in 1840 and one of the first buyers of gold dust in 1851. Member for Newcastle in 1869. Postmaster-General and Colonial Treasurer and Minister for Mines

Details: George Alfred Lloyd - Merchant and co. dir. Born 14 Nov. 1815 Norwood, Surrey, Eng., eldest son of Joseph Lloyd, corn merchant, and Eleanor Sophia, nee Lyne; Married 1 July 1841 Syd., Mary, d. Rev. L.E. Threlkeld; 5s.3d. survived him. Died 25 Dec. 1897 Elizabeth Bay, NSW. Educated Aske s Hosp. School, Lond. Became clerk to shipping and insurance broker. Arr. Aust. 1833 almost penniless as clerk to family friend after father s business failed. Opened store for employer at Hinton on Hunter R 1834, where also postmaster. Became farmer, Williams R, when employer failed. Returned Syd. 1840; auctioneer in partnership with Ambrose Foss; bankrupt July 1843, discharged December; later paid all creditors in full. In business as auctioneer, tallow and hide merchant. Bought Californian gold, then Aust. gold from 1851, contributing Weekly Gold Circular to Sydney Morning Herald; pres. Turon Gold Ridge Quartz Crushing Co. and Syd. Gold Escort Co. 1852. Trustee and dir Second Aust. Benefit and Investment Soc. Made fortune, which invested in steamships; joined Syd. and Melb. Steam Packet Co. 1853. To Eng. 1855, where his co. , Lloyd, Beilby & Co., were commercial agents to NSW govt until 1859. Lost heavily on shipping ventures; bankrupt Sept. 1859, discharged June 1860. Returned Syd. 1860; became merchant importing wheat and flour from California and Chile. In 1860s dir Cardiff Coal Co., Bulli Coal Mining Co.; local dir Lond. and Lancashire Fire and Life Assurance Co. Later agent for Cornwall Fire and Marine Insurance Co. Bought horses for Indian govt. A founder and auditor AMP Soc.; original shareholder in Syd. Exchange Co., of which dir 1872-97. Visited Eng. 1884-85. Bankrupt again Aug. 1887. Had visited California, NZ and Europe; elected fellow Royal Geographical Soc., Lond., 1857; member Royal Soc. of NSW 1874. For over 50 years prominent in Pitt Street Cong. Church. Estate valued at under £521. MLA for Newcastle 3 Dec. 1869-12 Oct. 1877, 22 Nov. 1880-23 Nov. 1882, 16 Oct. 1885-26 Jan. 1887. MLC 15 Feb. 1887-25 Dec. 1897.
