Details: John Campbell per Jane, assigned to Mr. Davis of Jerrys Plains, charged with taking a quantity of tobacco and sugar to the Stockade at Newcastle contrary to the regulations....Constable William Rouse testified...yesterday about one oclock, Mr. Gibson sent for me. The prisoner was detected in going into the Stockade with a quantity of tea, sugar and wearing apparel on searching the man I found the things produced in his possession. He denied the tea or tobacco to belong to him. He said it was given to him by a man who was just gone to the gaol. I found the man but he denied having given it to him. He said he had come from Mr. Sparkes with the prisoner and that he had the things in his possession when he met him. He told me that his master had sent him with two letters to Mr. Reid, the artist. On enquiring I found that he had no such letters. Seeing a shift of dirty clothes in his possession he said his master had given him the clothes he had on and that he had plenty more at home. I also found on his person two dollars, two shillings and one half crown with eleven pence in coppers which he said his master gave him. There were 46 figs of tobacco and about a pound of tea. Guilty. Sentenced to 50 lashes and to be forwarded to the Bench at Patrick Plains
