Details: An old and esteemed townsman, Mr. William Corner, who has for the last twenty-eight years carried on the business of a merchant in this town, is about to retire from business, having, we are happy to know, realised a large competency, notwithstanding bad times, loss of crops, and other difficulties and embarrassments from which our residents have all suffered for some years past. Mr. Corner has disposed of his business here to a Mr. Poilen, of Sydney, who takes possession on the 1st of March. We are sorry, however, to learn that we are likely to lose Mr. Corner as a resident amongst us, as he has almost decided to take up his future residence in Brisbane, where he has largo properties.

Details: WILLIAM CORNER was born in 1815 in Newhaven, Sussex, England, and in 1839 arrived in Sydney, New South Wales. He entered the employ of Samuel Peek, merchant, and on leaving the service of that gentleman settled on the Paterson, and there because a storeman. For two years he followed the occupation of a farmer, and then engaged in storekeeping with Mr. George Wilkinson. On the death of the latter, in 1848, he purchased the business, which he for many years carried on successfully. At one time, when a great MAITLANI). quantity of grain was produced in this district, Mr. Corner was the largest buyer, and occasionally purchased in one month as much as is at present grown in the locality in a year. He was the owner of two flour mills, which are now lying idle owing to the scarcity of grain, and owns 1000 acres of land, which he devotes to the purposes of grazing. He is the proprietor of Rose Bank, an estate of 2560 acres near Hinton, and Sinclair, a block of 1050 acres on the Williams River. Mr. Corner was elected a member of the District Council of Paterson in 1854, and held that position for many years. It was owing to his influence that the upper road passing through Paterson township was constructed. He has supplied some of the material necessary to make many of the most important roads and one bridge in the place and was made a justice of the peace in 1873. This position he some years after resigned in consequence of pressure of other business
