Details: THOMAS CROUDACE, Manager of the Lambton Colliery, was born in 1 838 at Durham, and received his education at the Royal Kepier Grammar School under the Rev. Dr. Young. He served his apprenticeship as a mining engineer under the late John Robson-one of the most eminent engineers of his day-and was for two years employed on the celebrated engineering works and offices of the late Robt. Stephenson. In 1861 he engaged with the Scottish Australian Mining Company of London to take charge of their mining properties in New South Wales and to develop what is now known as the Lambton NEWCASTLE. Collier. To this object Mr. Croudace came out to the colonies. In 1863 the first coal of this mine was sent to market, and the out-put and importance of the property steadily increased from that date. The plant now comprises some of the finest machinery in the colonies - the best portion of it having come from the works of Sir John Whitworth-and gives employment to about 500 men. A few years ago Mr. Croudace, agreeably to the wishes of the local residents, stood for municipal honors, and was thrice elected mayor of the Lambton Council. It was during his mayoralty and owing to his influence that the present Lambton Park was cleared and laid out as a recreation reserve. He was founder and president of the local school-of-arts and has been a member of the School Board since its establishment. He is a J .P. and a member of the Licensing Bench . Prior to visiting England, Mr. Croudace married the eldest daughter of Mrs. Skelly, of Ballymena , Antrim , Ireland , by whom he has four sons and four daughters . Mr. Croudace s eldest son is at present serving his time in the Lambton works. On the conclusion of his term he will proceed to England, and there finish his engineering studies
