Details: THOMAS LOCKWOOD COOPER, Butcher, High-street, was born in 1823 in London, and in 1837 accompanied his parents to Australia. After spending about twelve months in Sydney, the family removed to Maitland, where Mr. Cooper, Sen., started the business of a butcher, brickmaker, and farmer. Our subject worked with his father for some time and afterwards as journeyman butcher at various places. In 1850 he made a trip with cattle to New Zealand, and in the following year again crossed over to that colony with cattle. He next entered into partnership with one Captain Adams, bought a vessel named the Carway, and went into the timber line, trading between Auckland and Port Cooper. Some time later he sold out, went over to Melbourne, and purchased a butchering business in Bourke -street, which he conducted until 1854. Selling out he engaged in the trade of a horse-dealer between Melbourne and Hobart Town. He abandoned this and purchased another butchering business in Collingwood, carrying that on till 1856. In this year he returned to Maitland. After following farming pursuits for two years, he took over and managed his father s business for a time, and paid a second visit to Melbourne, again going into business there. Returning two years later he became the sole proprietor of his father s business which is one of the oldest-established butchering connections in the northern districts. Mr. Cooper has been twice married and has eleven children living
