Details: THOMAS COOK, of Turonville , was born in 1834 near Hamilton, Canada, his parents being natives of Cornwall , England. He arrived in New South Wales in the November of 1837, and spent the early part of his life at Neminga , near Tamworth , where he followed a bush life and general squatting pursuits. He was the owner of large station properties on the Barwon and Namoi rivers and Thalaba Creek , which were named Pockotoroo, North and South Oreel , and Merry Winebone . These were sold to a company about six years ago. Mr. Cook is the proprietor of Drildool Station , on the Namoi River, with about 50,000 sheep and 3000 cattle , in addition to other stations in the Gwyder district and Turonville estate, near Scone , on the Upper Hunter ; the total area being about 12 ,000 acres . He annually rears on the latter property between 250 and 300 horses , for which purpose are kept ten stallions-thoroughbred, crossbred , and English roadsters . The Turonville horses command the best market prices when annually placed for sale, and they are disposed of to the highest bidder . This has been done by our subject for several years . Mr. Cook has the foals and yearlings tied up in boxes, and there handled and made quiet , when they are turned out to grow to maturity, no expense being spared to make the breeding a success. Four hundred acres of land are under lucerne , which area it is the intention of the proprietor to increase to 1000 acres , the present crop yielding from 400 to 500 tons of hay annually. Mr. Cook makes it a rule to keep on hand several hundred tons of hay, which enables him to supply his stock with fodder during seasons of drought . His property is subdivided into between forty and fifty paddocks , all of which are sown with prairie, white clover , rye, and other English grasses. Altogether Mr. Cook s property is one of the most compact one on the Hunter
