Elizabeth Ray in service to Edward Charles Close charged with general misconduct. Benjamin Elstone, overseer at r. Closes Farm states...the prisoner has been but a short time in my masters service. She was appointed to take care of the dairy. On Friday last my master came to Newcastle leaving me in charge of everything on the farm. On that day she made away with two or three gallons of new milk improperly. I could not keep her away from the wharf that day or from talking to the people who were on the boats that were passing. On my remonstrations with her she set me at defiance and told me that for every once she had been at the wharf that day she would go twice on the following day. On Friday evening she made the complete round of the mens huts. On Saturday morning there were seven buckets of milk from the cows, three buckets of which she made away with. I also missed about seven pounds of butter. On Sunday morning I found upwards of a gallon of new milk in one of the mens huts. I was told by them it was brought there by Elizabeth Ray....The men on the farm are allowed skimmed milk from the dairy but never new milk. Every one on the farm knows I am the overseer. I have been so upwards of two years. Elizabeth Ray in her defence states. The skimmed milk was sour so I have the men new milk. When I went to the wharf I did not speak to any person. Sentenced to solitary confinement one week on bread and water and afterwards to be sent to the Factory at Parramatta
