In 1860 services were held in the home of, Mr. David Howells at (Glebe; until a building was erected in Pitt-street, afterwards known as Queen street. In 1861 Rev. George Whiteford became the first pastor. Rev. Phillip Lane undertook the first charge In 1864. In the same year Captain Smith of the ship Annie Jane negotiated with the ship owners for a piece of land and in 1883 adjoining land in Sydney street was purchased and important additions were undertaken. In 1885 Rev. Seth Jones arrived from South Wales and preached in the Sydney street Church until 1890. The Tabernacle in Laman street was opened on September 28 that year
