Details: Mr. D. J. Ryan reviewed the building development in High-street in an address at the weekly dinner of the Maitland Rotary Club -Dealing with the old row of shops, which were recently demolished for the site of the new Maitland Mercury office, Mr. Ryan said that no records were available regarding the erection of the building, but It was known that in 1831 the premises were occupied by Captain Bourn Russell. who conducted a general store. He had records which disclosed that Henry Russell, the Government Astronomer, who was a son of Captain Russell, was born in the building on March 17, 1836. Captain Russell, he said, had a leading business in the town, and was the first man to introduce paper bags to wrap up groceries. Before the introduction of paper bags, customers were compelled to bring billy cans and numerous kinds of containers to carry their groceries home. Captain Russell also opened the first coalmine at Maitland. The mine was situated near the old toll bar, at the turn-off to Farley, on the New England Highway, which was then only a bush track known as the Great Northern road. The mine supplied private household coal in Maitland for many years. Captain Russell also had a boiling down works. In one week 12,500 sheep were boiled down. The carcases produced 498 casks of tallow, representing 150 tons.
