Christ Church Burial Ground, Newcastle
Details:
Near the centre of the churchyard there is a grave over which is a massive stone with carved legs. The inscriptions reads - Sacred to the memory of James Cook, who died October 12 1838 aged 72. Also Jane beloved wife of Henry Usher and sister of Mr. Thomas Dee of West Maitland who died March 13 1856. In the same grave is buried Henry Usher her husband. The latter as a well known figure in Newcastle. For years he kept a store in Bolton Street where Dr. Eames surgery now stands. He amassed considerable wealth and at his death left substantial bequests to the Newcastle Hospital and the Anglican Cathedral building fund. The store subsequently passed into the hands of Mr. McCormick of whom a good story is told.
