Details: Peter Riley and Garret Farrell, runaways from government service....Nicholas Heally overseer of the prisoners barracks at Newcastle states - On Saturday evening the 1st December last Peter Riley and Garret Farrell were missed at the evening muster. They were only reported as runaways and I have not seen either of them from the time of their absconding until they were respectively brought to Newcastle in custody. Peter Riley states in his defence - I am free having served my original sentence of transportation. I am now under sentence of 3 years extension of sentence which I do not consider legal, the offence not being of the 1st class. Garrett Farrell makes no defence. Sentences: Farrell sentenced to 75 lashes; Riley sentenced to 50 lashes. N.B. The sentence passed on Peter Riley not to be carried into effect until his defence is submitted to His Excellency the Governor
