Details: Second son of Capt. Ranclaud of the 56th regt., Born in the island of Jersey in 1819. At the age of 10 years he accompanied his parents to the colony. He was educated at the Australian College and Normal Institution, and at the Hanwell Collegiate School, England, where he finished his studies, and remained four years. On his return to the colony in 1840 he passed 12 months in the Colonial Secretarys office but was obliged to leave through ill health and to return to Newcastle. He carried on farming for 6 years and moved to Redhead where he worked in the timber trade. In 1853 he moved to Newcastle where he held the position of Returning Officer for 30 years and was Coroner for the district for 9 years. In 1888 he held the position of shipping manager of New Lambton and Ferndale Colliery. He is the father of five sons and two daughters
