OWEN AND BECKETT, General Merchants, Tailors, Wool brokers, Wine and Spirit Merchants, High-street.-This business (one of the oldest in the district) was established in 1838 by the late Mr. Samuel Owen and Mr. Isaac Beckett, who until 1884 carried on the concern, when Samuel Owen, junr., and Alfred Beckett-their sons-succeeded to the property. The firm are large exporters of wool and import extensive lines of all classes of general merchandise. Samuel Owen was born in Sydney in 1840, received his education in Maitland and in New Zealand, and, on the completion of his studies, entered the mercantile house under notice. Beginning as an assistant in Sydney, he has spent twenty years in the warehouse, and is now the senior partner. Mr. Owen is a director of the Great Northern Building Society, hon. secretary and trustee of the Wesleyan Church, and a member of the Hospital Committee. Alfred Beckett was born in West Maitland in 1853, received his education in Maitland and subsequently at Newington College, Sydney; but on finishing his studies entered a mercantile house in the metropolis. After remaining in this position for fifteen years, he became part proprietor of the business to which allusion has been made. Mr. Beckett is lieutenant in the 4th Regiment Infantry and takes a great interest in all matters affecting the district. He married in 1886, and has one child living
