A resident of Newcastle unearthed a valuable book relating to early convict days in Newcastle containing original depositions of the cases heard at the Newcastle Police Office in the year 1829 - David Newton, sentenced to 50 lashes for drunkenness. William Maybury, the chief wardsman at the hospital stated that the prisoner went to the hospital between the hours of 5 and 6 oclock very much intoxicated

Mr. Denis Newton, aged 87 years, one of the oldest residents of the Maitland district, died at his residence, East Maitland, on Thursday afternoon, after a lengthy illness. He had lived in this district for over half a century, and during his residence he earned the respect of all, with whom he came in contact. For many years the late Mr. Newton occupied the position of caretaker at the waterworks at West Maitland. He is survived by his widow. One of his sons, Trooper Eric Newton, was killed at Gallipoli. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, the interment being made in the East Maitland cemetery.
