Details: Joseph Wright per ship Marquis of Huntley, assigned to Mr. William Millar, charged with insolence....William Millar states - On the 9th of last month the prisoner was working in the tobacco field; I told him to get on faster; he gave me some insolence; I told him to be quiet; He said he would not do the same work as another man unless he had the same indulgence; I told him to be silent; he answered in a very outrageous manner; none of your cheek I ll take none of it; in a few minutes after I told him he must be aware of the consequences of such conduct. He said yes I ll get flogged if you perjure yourself as you did before; you are like a negro driver but flogging will do no good to me My overseer was absent from the farm and on his return the prisoner was sick and was not able to come to court until today. The prisoner states in his defence that he was not able to work as another man for he has been used to wear a truss all his days and that he had nothing but beef bread and water to live upon. The Bench find the prisoner guilty and sentence him to receive fifty lashes.
