A resident of Newcastle unearthed a valuable book relating to early convict days in Newcastle containing original depositions of the cases heard at the Newcastle Police Office in the year 1829 - Richard Mara, a constable, for a breach of the prison regulations in carrying spirits to the gaol was dismissed from the situation. He was seen to place a bottle of rum in his box, and he defied the other constables to take it, threatening to break their skulls if they attempted to do so
