Benjamin Lee - Country entrepreneur. B. 5 Nov. 1825 Ampthill, Bedfordshire, Eng., s. Benjamin and Lucy Ann, nee Poulton? m. 21 July 1856 Melb., Sarah Amelia Stephens; ls.8d. survived him. D. 15 July 1917 Annandale, NSW. C. of E. funeral. Arr. Syd. with parents, bounty immigrants, Jan. 1829, father becoming estate manager, later publican, landowner and pastoralist. Ed. The King s School, Parramatta. In early 1840s managed father s farms. To Eng. 1854; returned Aust. To Maitland 1857 and with brother, John, set up as general drapers. Chmn Hunter R New Steam Navigation Co. 1861-74. In 1860s held 3 squatting runs in NSW and, with his father, two in Qld. In financial difficulties 1874, and appointed police magistrate, Bathurst, by Parkes at £500 p.a.; also visiting justice to Bathurst gaol; local mining warden 1875; coroner 1881; later a guardian of minors. Transferred to Water Police Office, Syd., June 1889; stipendiary magistrate at £800 p.a. April 1890; retired on pension of£247 p.a. March 1893. JP 1861, omitted from list 1864, restored 1865. Comr international exhibition, Lond., 1873. First member of LA to punch another member on the nose in the house, 1868; normally even-tempered. Estate valued at £5000. Brother of C.A. Lee (q.v.) MLA for W. Maitland 13 Dec. 1864-20 July 1874
