Charged with drunkenness....Constable William Rouse testified...Between nine and ten oclock last night, I saw the prisoner down on Mr. Reid s premises in company with six or seven of Mr. Reid s assigned servants. They were sober. No person complained of her excepting Samuel Langham who complained that her language near his door was disgusting. He had thrown water on her to drive her away. She is an habitual drunkard.....Samuel Langham testified....Last night between eight and nine oclock the prisoner was near my door; she was drunk and used abominable language in the hearing of my family; her expressions were obscene; she called Mr. Reid s baker a bloody bugger....Prisoner offered no defence...Guilty. to enter into sureties for good behaviour for six months under penalties of 10 pounds and to be committed to the gaol for one month

And Henry Chaff, grandson of Samuel Langham, died July 26 1854, also James Henry Langham, eldest son of the above, died June 9 1866 aged 31. Mr. Langham was a well known resident. His wife for many years kept a shop in the city in the earlier period of its history. One of his sons was inspector of fisheries, and a daughter married a Mr. Chaff, whose sons are in business in Watt Street, Newcastle (1902)
