JOHN HAY, Shipwright and Shipowner, was born at Speymouth, Morayshire, Scotland, in 1827, learnt his business there, and worked at it afterwards in various parts of Scotland. He made several voyages to sea, visiting La Plate, the Baltic, India, and Australia, and settled in Sydney in 1855, but left there shortly after and came to Newcastle here he has since resided. He was engaged for a few month1 supplying timber for the Newcastle and Maitland Railway, and in 1858 he, with two partners , built the first ship in Newcastle, at Stockton, which continued in existence for twenty-five years. They also built the first saw mill erected at Stockton. In 1878 Dlr. Hay joined with Mr. Gillan in the ownership of vessels, and they soon became possessed of four ships ; one of these is at present trading to China, one to San Francisco, and two on the coast. Mr. Hay is an active member of the progress Committee of Stockton, but he devotes his principal attention to business
