Description of Henry Geering by an old steamer master.....In the early days there was an extensive blacksmithing, wheelwright and machinery establishment at Bowthorne where a large amount of work was done for the farmers. This business was carried on by the late Henry Geering, machinery and hay presses were contructed by this firm. This establishment has long since been demolished and the site is now occupied by a broom factory, carried on by Mr. Samuel Foster

HENRY GEERING, Ironfounder, Agricultural Implement Maker, and General Blacksmith, was born in London in 1826, and in 1828 accompanied his parents to Australia. In 1835 the family settled in the Hunter district, where young Geering was apprenticed to a baker in Maitland. Four years later he took to the blacksmithing trade in Hinton, and having learned this, he established himself in a business in 1849. Starting in a small way, he increased his connection until to-day his plant and machinery are of the most complete in the district, and include slotting machine, steam hammer, and lathes. Mr. Geering has taken numerous prizes for the excellence of his hay presses, hay rakes, and mowing machines. He was married in 1850 in Hinton, and has three children living
