PETER FLEMING, who was born in Scotland in 1817, and who on arrival in the colony came to Newcastle , opened a butcher s shop in 1838 in Hunter -street. In 1857 Mr. Fleming joined Mr. Ranclaud and started business in Market -street, and continued in partnership for sixteen years . At their commencement the firm killed sixteen bullocks weekly, but at the conclusion they sold over one hundred bullocks and one hundred and fifty sheep, besides pigs, calves, etc. On the termination of this successful partnership, Mr. Fleming re tired from business, and since then has occupied himself principally in land speculations, which have proved eminently profitable. He bought certain land at £2 per acre, and sold it at £1700, exclusive of the value of its contained coal, which is worth £1000 per year. He is a large land-owner at Lake Macquarie, and owns ten shops in the centre of Newcastle, besides numerous properties in the district. He was elected among the first aldermen of Newcastle, and filled the office during twenty-seven consecutive years. Mr. Fleming has a numerous family . He remembers Newcastle in its infancy , when small vessels entered the port between Nobbys and the mainland
