JAMES THOMAS DEE, of the Rutherford Hotel, was born in West Maitland in 1833, and received his education partly in Maitland and partly in Sydney. On completing his studies he entered the mercantile office of F. McNabb and Co., remained there for two and a half years, and then visited the goldfields of New South Wales and Victoria, working for five years with varied success. On the death of his father he returned to Maitland, from where, after managing family affairs for from two to three years, he went to the Maranra district in Queensland to stock new country. Returning to Maitland he purchased teams and proceeded to Peak Downs and Clermont, between which towns and Rockhampton he traded until the year 1865. Shortly after this he again returned to Maitland, where he became engaged in farming ventures. For eighteen years he conducted such operations, when his lands were devastated by the great floods which at that time swept down the Hunter. Selling his property he opened in 1884 the Rutherford Hotel. This house pleasantly situated on the Rutherford Estate, and fronting the Great Northern -road-is about five minutes walk from the well-known Campbells Hill sale yards, and possesses every accommodation for man and beast. Mr. Dee was in his younger days a great athlete. He has been twice married and has two sons and three daughters
