Details: On 9th of October 1884 the Rev. James Coutts, M.A., breathed his last in the oldest house in Newcastle, where he had long been recognised as one of the foremost citizens. He departed full of years, the age on his coffin was 87. He was born in the parish of Crathie on the Deeside, Scotland and came to Australia in 1847 and ministered to the Presbyterian congregation at Parramatta until 1860 when he accepted a call to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Newcastle

Details: In 1849 the Rev. James Coutts, M.A., was appointed by the Colonial Committee of the Church of Scotland as the minister of Parramatta, and arrived in due course. The church, which had been in course of erection, was opened shortly after his arrival. Mr Coutts laboured in Parramatta till, in 1861, he was translated to St. Andrews, Newcastle. At his death he left a large sum to found a Sailors Home at Newcastle. He was succeeded by the Rev. Thomas Craig
