JAMES CANN, Storekeeper, was born in Devonshire, England, in 1837, and in 1838 accompanied his parents to Australia. Mr. Cann -the grandfather of the above-had filled the position of overseer on the Tilimby estate of John H. Boughton, and received the usual grant of land in the year 1824, which, upon his death, became the property of his son William. This is still in the possession of James Cann. For some years William Cann-father of the subject of this sketch-followed the business of farming, also his trade of wheelwright and machinist; and when gold was discovered went to the diggings and started storekeeping. In 1861 Mr. James Cann commenced business on his own account as a hawker. In 1868 he, in company with his brother, established the business under notice. This firm carry on three establishments-two in Paterson and one at Vacy, the latter being conducted by his brother and do the largest trade of any merchants on the Paterson.
