Mr. Coutts continued the sole minister of St. Andrews Newcastle, until the beginning of 1874, when the Rev. T. A. Gordon was inducted as his colleague and successor. Some seven or eight years after that, Mr. Coutts was called away to his rest. Mr. Gordon continued sole pastor until failing health constrained him to retire
